Researchers at the University of Rochester Wilmot Cancer Institute discovered something simple and inexpensive to reduce neuropathy in hands and feet due to chemotherapy—exercise.

The study, involving more than 300 cancer patients, is to be presented this weekend and honored as a “Best of ASCO” among 5,800 abstracts at the world’s largest gathering of oncologists, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting 2016.  More than a dozen other Wilmot scientists also were invited to present data at the meeting.

Investigators for the exercise study directly compared the neuropathic symptoms in non-exercisers to the pain among patients who took part in a specialized six-week walking routine with gentle, resistance-band training at home.

URCC NCORP Research Base 2016 Annual Meeting PDF Print E-mail

The annual meeting of the URCC NCORP Research Base will be September 9 and 10 at the Rochester Convention Center.  It will follow the same format as in previous years, i.e., we will meet all day Friday and Saturday until noon with a group dinner Friday night.  Guests will be staying at Rochester’s “Premier Boutique Hotel,” the Strathallan

Last year, the study chairs from our active protocols were available Thursday night to discuss each of their studies with NCORP site staff and investigators in face-to-face small groups.  Feedback from meeting attendees and study chairs was overwhelmingly positive for this arrangement.  We will therefore be offering this forum for discussion of study-specific questions, issues, and successes again this year.

Due to the current accelerated rate of accrual, we need to move the date that the study is closing to accrual to Friday, March 18, 2016.

We are changing the date so that we do not exceed our target accrual by a large number.  You will be able to register subjects up until 5:00 PM EST on March 18.  No registrations will be accepted after that time. The study will remain
open and you will be responsible for following all registered subjects at your site until they complete study
requirements.
